Short answer: the AI impact on jobs in Saudi Arabia is growing quickly, but it's changing jobs more than cutting them. In the second quarter of 2026, 31.4% of Saudi Arabia's working-age population used generative AI, and the Kingdom climbed five places to 25th in the world, the biggest rise of any country (Microsoft AI Diffusion Report). Overall unemployment was just 3.0% in Q2 2026 (GASTAT), and the government has already trained more than one million Saudis in AI through the free SAMAI programme. Routine office and admin tasks are most exposed; technical, field and customer-facing work much less so.

Here's what this means if you work in Riyadh, Jeddah, Dammam or anywhere in the Kingdom.

Key takeaways

  • 31.4% of Saudi Arabia's working-age population used generative AI in Q2 2026, up from 23.7% in the first half of 2025 (Microsoft).
  • Saudi Arabia rose from 30th to 25th globally in a single quarter, the largest rise in the ranking.
  • More than 1 million Saudis have been trained in AI through SDAIA's free SAMAI initiative.
  • Overall unemployment was 3.0% in Q2 2026; 6.5% for Saudis and 1.3% for non-Saudis (GASTAT).
  • Worldwide, workers with AI skills earn a wage premium of about 62% (PwC 2026 Global AI Jobs Barometer).

Is AI taking jobs in Saudi Arabia?

Not on any scale you can see in the numbers. The General Authority for Statistics (GASTAT) reported overall unemployment of 3.0% in the second quarter of 2026, down slightly from 3.1% in the first quarter. Unemployment among non-Saudis was only 1.3%. Saudi Arabia's economy is expanding fast under Vision 2030, with giga-projects, tourism, entertainment, logistics and manufacturing all hiring.

What AI is doing is changing the work inside companies. Banks, telecom providers, government entities and large private employers are using AI chatbots for customer service, AI tools for documents and reports, and AI analytics for decisions. That means slower hiring for purely routine office roles, and more demand for people who can use and manage AI.

How fast is Saudi Arabia adopting AI?

Faster than almost anywhere else right now. Microsoft's AI Diffusion Report shows the share of Saudi working-age adults using generative AI rising from 23.7% in the first half of 2025 to 26.2% in the second half, 29.4% in the first quarter of 2026 and 31.4% in the second quarter.

The government is pushing hard. The Saudi Data and Artificial Intelligence Authority (SDAIA) leads the National Strategy for Data and AI, and in 2025 the Public Investment Fund launched HUMAIN, a national AI company building AI infrastructure and services in the Kingdom.

Which jobs in Saudi Arabia are most exposed to AI?

Risk level Example roles in Saudi Arabia What's likely to change
Higher Data entry, admin assistants, call centre agents, basic customer service, document controllers, junior bookkeepers, translators Fewer new openings; remaining staff handle complex cases and check AI output
Medium Accountants, HR specialists, marketing staff, sales coordinators, software developers, analysts Routine tasks automated; employers want people who use AI to work faster
Lower Nurses, technicians, electricians, site engineers, drivers, chefs, hotel and retail staff Limited direct impact; physical and face-to-face work is hard to automate

Saudi Arabia's biggest employers of expatriates (construction, giga-projects, facilities management, healthcare, hospitality and logistics) rely heavily on in-person work. That's why AI is changing office jobs faster than the labour market as a whole.

Is AI creating jobs in Saudi Arabia?

Yes. Saudi Arabia is investing heavily in data centres, AI services and digital government, which creates demand for software engineers, data scientists, cybersecurity specialists and cloud engineers. Just as important, it creates demand for ordinary office professionals who can use AI tools well.

Globally, PwC's 2026 AI Jobs Barometer found that jobs requiring AI skills are growing far faster than the job market overall, and that workers with AI skills earn an average wage premium of about 62%. Saudi employers competing for talent are following the same trend.

What is SAMAI, and can expats use it?

SAMAI is SDAIA's national programme to train one million Saudis in AI. It passed that target, with more than one million citizens trained, around 9% of the working-age population. The courses are free, in Arabic, and give accredited certificates. Participants were 52% women and 48% men, and 70% were employees. A second phase, SAMAI 2, focuses on AI adoption in government workplaces.

SAMAI is aimed at Saudi citizens. Expats can learn the same skills through free online courses from Microsoft, Google and IBM. See our guide on how to AI-proof your career in Saudi Arabia.

Will AI take my job? A quick check

  1. Is most of my day repetitive computer work? Then your role is more exposed.
  2. Do I work with my hands or face to face with people? If yes, the risk is lower.
  3. Do I make decisions, manage people or handle difficult situations? AI supports these parts of the job.
  4. Am I using AI tools at work yet? If not, start now.
